Abstained Agogo - No.Nine:

COMING SOON

20 December 2010

Abstained Agogo: I Am Not Voting.

1- Yes. I am not a registered voter. Why? Its a choice. My "political" friends kept bugging me to register as a registered voter. So I asked them why? So that my "voice" can be heard. What if I chose not to vote? Then I have to live with it. I can not complaint and I can not say anything because I have failed to exercise my rights. FFFUUUU...

2- First of all, Barisan Nasional is full of shit and everybody knows that. The Malay, Chinese and Indian faction of Barisan Nasional are all equally full of shit. The alternative? Fuckutan Riot? Give me a break. Do you think that megalomaniac Anwar Ibrahim will be able to run this country to the benefit of the people? I highly doubt that.

3- Thus I chose to vote for a non existent candidate, and since he or she is non existence thus her name would not appear on the voting poll. I chose not to vote because not voting is also a vote. A vote against all the candidates. Do not act like you do not have any choice my friends.

4- Whatever it is, the brutal truth is nobody gives a fuck about the people. Not the Barisan Nasional nor the Fuckutan Riot. Thats the ugly truth. So why bother giving shits about them?

Abstained Agogo - It Has Been A While:

1- What's new pussy cat? Nothing really. It is indeed an amazing feeling that I am still getting orders for Abstained Agogo Fanzine. It is indeed an amazing feeling that I managed to sell Abstained. If I can trade satisfaction with a pot of gold, most probably I'll be filthily wealthy by now. So what's next?

2- Will there be another issue of Abstained? There were some endless pokes and taunts between me and my co editor, Azril Yatim about the ninth issue of Abstained. Will it ever materialize? Yes. When? I do not know. But there will definitely be another issue. Definitely. It is the answer to when that remains indefinite.

3- I have already informed my other co editor, Dhani Ahmad Faisal, if we were to release the ninth issue, we would maintain the price. RM5.00 by hand and some stamps if by post. But this time around, we shall be adding 20 extra pages to the current 60. Your moneys worth.

4- Stay tuned.

Abstained Agogo - Beware The Closet Racist:

1- I love those Merdeka television adverts. I think they should be more serious in promoting racial unity in Malaysia. That 1Malaysia thingy, which to my honest opinion, was a good idea but execution wise, I dont think nobody up there got a fucking clue how to properly promote it. A political maneuver by UMNO to gain more votes from the non malays? Fuck you and your fucking politics.

2- The media station should put up those racial unity ads everyday if that is a possibility. If this can be done, I honestly believe long enough people must start and appreciate and love each other. Either they were all touched or exhausted, either ways they will eventually go out and hug their neighbors.

3- Race will always be there and so does race base politics. All I can say is fuck politicians.

Abstained Agogo - The Writers Block Flu:

1- Welcome to the real world of writers.

2- What is writers block? Its a writers disease where something will block your mind from getting the necessary ideas for a good entry or article or a story for your book. You might have a slight idea on a topic but you are clueless when it all goes down to the pens and papers. Or you might have no idea at all.

3- When I was writing for Abstained #8, ideas came pouring out. Now, in the midst of preparing for the next issue, I have yet to have a clue on how am I going to write or on what should I write about. I dont think we will be seeing the next issue of Abstained any sooner I guess.

Abstained Agogo - Awareness not coolness:

1- Since when it's considered cool to be Hardcore Punk? Okay, it IS cool to be Hardcore Punk. I guess it all goes back to the tribal thingy and sense of belonging. Come on, is it not cool to be able to say " Hey, I am a Punk and You are not. Fuck you and your momma". If that is not cool then I do not know what is.

2- To be with happy with like minded people, sharing the same love for this music for the outcast with the like minded people, being able to go to punk shows and meet new like minded people are the tribal nature of men. Why? Happiness, security, comfort, sense of belonging maybe.

3- On a serious note, should one consider Hardcore Punk a cool thing to do? Fuck no. Fuck hardcore Punk if its a cool thing to do. How do you DO hardcore Punk anyway?

4- Okay, young minds will always be attracted to all things rebellion, James Dean and anti authoritarianism because hell, it does sound cool. What more if you can wear Hardcore shirts to show your allegiance to the scene. Well, fuck you and your hardcore t shirts.

5- We can just hope that they will soon realize that awareness, knowledge, education and direct action is way cooler than Hardcore Punk.

Abstained Agogo - Muslimcore:

1- Have you read The Taqwacores or its silly spin off, Osama Van Halen by Michael Muhammad Knight? You should. The book, The Taqwacore, even inspired a new "genre" of punk music called Taqwacore spearheaded by prominent "Taqwa bands" in the likes of The Kominas and Vote Hezbollah. Search them on youtube, you might find them entertaining.

2- Taqwacore is basically an amalgamation of punk idealism and Islamic Mystic or Sufism. Oh, the movie will be out pretty soon too, I think. From the looks of the trailer on youtube, the movie seems to be interesting enough.

3- Fascinating enough, back in the middle of the 90's, I do not know who but somebody had coined the term Muslimcore. I do not know whether it was a legit ideology or just a derogatory sarcastic remark against those who opposed Straightedge back in the days. But the term did exist in the local scene, way before the release of The Taqwacore novel from the booth of Knight's car back in 2002 nevertheless.

4- Would you associate Islam with punk? I do not know about you but I dont. Just my worthless two cents.

Abstained Agogo - The Millenium Definition:

1- There were a few blogs and websites in the cyber-space that were kind enough to republish my article on definition of punk, an article I wrote like ages ago for Cintakan Aman Newsletter. As you might have known by now, this blog basically is just a continuation of that now defunct newsletter hence the name Cintakan Aman Blog but nobody cares about that anyway, so...

2- When I read that old article of mine from these silly blogs, I often thought of how innocent and naive was I back then. Maybe out of sheer youthful excitement or that rebellion of a young mind that I associate almost everything with the term Punk, to an extent, I was like, "Wow. did I wrote that?". Fuck. Well at least I thought it was kind of cool at that time doing that.

3- Punk, for me, was a counter-culture. If the culture at that time endorses corduroys, nice slacks, collage hair cuts and Pete Frampton, then punk would be like leather jackets, torn jeans, mohawks, spikes and Sex Pistols. Going against the popular culture. Although nowadays, it has become a popular culture by itself (thanks to the capitalists), the relevance of punk is still there nevertheless.

4- Other than and beyond that, is up to the individuals really. There were never any boundaries on how you should define it. You can define it, you can associate it with anything you like and you can un-associate it. The world would still spin you know.

5- For me, Punk is just a platform for you to learn, define and redefine life. You can achieve very much the same things with other platforms in the likes of religions, schools or books. Embrace it and open your mind.

6- As for me, as I grew older I tend to associate things as it is. Human nature. Equality because everyone should be equal, love because everyone deserves love, human rights because that is the nature of it and the way it should be. Punk or no punk.

7- Just my worthless two cents.

Abstained Agogo - Copyright or Copyrespect:

1- I have never imposed any copyright rights on anything I wrote. Whether if it's in this blog, Abstained or in Flag and most probably never will impose such rights. But that does not mean that people can just steal anything from in here, Abstained or Flag without proper courtesy of the original source. For me, that is wrong and an infringement of rights.

2- I do not mind if people want to plagiarize the whole content of any of my fanzine as long as it is for a non profit project like Koleksizine etc but I expect to be informed of such act and my blessing should be sought after. That, my friends, are called courtesy and respect.

3- It all goes down to the whole debate of individualism and collectivism in Hardcore Punk. Collectivism is the root and the origin which fertilized another broad and fascinating idea called communism. Individualism on the other hand is human nature. Which one should come first.

4- There must be a well maintained balance between the two. If a punk rock author refuses to let people steal any of his work, then it is his right to do so. Is that not an individual right worth the respect? Is a punk rocker still a punk rocker for not letting people use any of his work? My answer would be in the positive. If you think otherwise, then you are an outright Fascist.

5- Just my worthless two cents.

Abstained Agogo - The Other Project:

My fingers are itching to write and type shits in English. Thus I am announcing that False Flag Fanzine #0, a super secret project that I have been working on since recently, will soon be unleashed to satisfy my lust for English essays, double meanings, horrible jokes, dumbfounded wit and grammatical errors . When? Soon. How soon? Very soon. How soon is very soon? Whatever. Fuck you and your mom!

Abstained Agogo - The Merch:

click for a larger view

Diatas adalah merchandise pertama kami. Not in a million years I would have thought that I would print that on t-shirts.

Till then..

Cheers.

p/s Thank you Muhd Aliff for the graphic and Atoi Switch2Tee for the printing.

Abstained Agogo - The Aftermath:

Salam.

First of all, I have finished reading this wonderful book/memoir titled "My Life With The Taliban" authored by Mullah Abdul Salam Zaeef. For those who are not in the know, Abdul Salam Zaeef is one of the senior and prominent figures in the Taliban Movement due to his role as the Taliban's ambassador to Pakistan. The book gave a thorough insider's view of the history and the origin of the movement known to the rest of the world as the Taliban.

You will be able to read the author's experience and involvement in the Jihad against the Soviet Union in 70's and 80's, the re-installation of order in Afghanistan when the Taliban, led by Mullah Muhammad Omar, seized control over Kabul in the 90's and the jihad against the U.S War on Terrorism in the wake of 9/11. The book also gave an insider's view of the torture and torment of being held in the infamous Guantanamo Bay prison.

Reading this book, I could not help but to compare it with one of my favorite book, Tersungkur di Pintu Syurga authored by Zabidi Mohamed, former legal adviser of the infamous AlArqam movement back here in Malaysia in the 90's. This is a good read indeed.

Having said that, i would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a selamat hari raya Aidilfitri dan Maaf zahir batin.

I would also like to thank those who have bought and read Abstained Agogo Fanzine. Up to this point I am happy to inform you that we have already sold almost 50 copies of the fanzine. sejak diterbitkan seminggu sebelum Aidilfitri. I was quite amazed myself with the massive support. The recultivation of the fanzine culture aint that impossible after all thanks to you my dear readers. I am still getting orders and hopefully by the end of this month, i will be able to achieve my target to clear at least 100 copies of the fanzine before I prepare myself for the next issue which will be released in January 2011, Insya Allah. Nampaknya akan ada juga isu yang kesembilan.

Back in the Abstained Agogo camp, all of us, me, Faisal and Ayeh, were all quite pumped up by the awesome support and interest shown towards the fanzine. Ye lah, kami rata ratanya dah lama tak menulis apatah lagi untuk menerbitkan fanzine. I am hoping that I will be able to achieve my objectives. I hope that there will more new fanzines being published out there and to see the kids get up and start their own fanzines. I would like to see that and hopefully I'll be able to see it soon.

Thank you for the support. If you wish to buy your copy of Abstained Agogo Fanzine, kindly email me at benignism@yahoo.com or sms me through 012-9147494. It will only cost you RM5 percopy and dont forget to include an RM1 stamp for the postage. If you are in Lembah Kelang, I will be more than happy to deliver it by hand. Nak kena timbang apa semua. OK.. see ya.

Cheers.

T Shirts Out:

Alhamdulillah. I have received the tshirts from Atoi Switch2tee today. Sayang tak dapat lepak dengan this nice fella. He seems friendly and down to earth guy.

Si Ambu Rebel Environment fanzine pun tak sempat nak lepak sambil jual fanzine aku dekat dia sebab dia nak balik cepat sangat. Aisey bro, bujang pun ada curfew ka bro? Hahaha. This fella is crazy with his fingers. His artworks were like crazy cool. Hopefully Ill have the opportunity to work with him someday.

I am not intending to really selling it these stupid t shirts. It was made to fulfill my lust for self glorification. Fuck yeah! I have officially joined the freaking band wagon. Maybe ill consider selling it to my closest friends who would not mind paying RM 20 for the stupid t shirt.

I sold 5 copies of Abstained Agogo Fanzine to Atoi. I do not what he is going to do with all those fanzines. Thank you dude. If you want to print shirts for your band, you can always contact this guy. He will certainly give you a good price.

New Flyer:

Fan Mentality and Metalcore Bullshit:

I am sorry but i hate fucking metalcore. Fuck me but metal core aint nothing but some bullshit gothenberg riffs recycled. One thing that i could not stand is that metalcore bands tends to be fucking generic. Do not get me wrong, I love gothenberg melodic death metal (the worthy ones of course) and Carcass heartwork LP will always be on the top 10 of my playlist, but come on. Give me a break. Whats with all these crabcore bands nowadays.

There are only a few Malaysian metal core bands that I think is worth the support. Black Territory is one of them. Combining that swedish feel with that youth crew shout along choruses will always be pretty much rad in my book. Other? Fuck the others!

One more thing. Whats with all the fucking tees? Your band played like one fucking show and your band have already got these florescent tees lined up on the store. Fuck. Is it the IN thing nowadays? The new "underground" trend? Go and shove your pride out of the fucking door, motherfuckers! What does it meant anyway? Monsters on your t shirts? What possible message are you trying to send out to the kids? That its cool to be in a fucking hardcore band? Fuck!

And to all the kids out there producing all these t-shirts, what in the fucking hell are you thinking? Grabbing some quick bucks at the expense of the scene and its naive young community? Straight edge watches? Are you kidding me? Whats next? Straight Edge underpants? Was it really about the idealism behind Straight Edge or the hip and awesomeness of claiming yourself to be one. Where the fuck did all the sincerity go?

Its all about fan mentality nowadays aint it? Fan fucking mentality. Fuck that shit.

Guilt Ridden

GUILT RIDDEN? Projek apa pulak ni?

Small Scale Selling:

Went out for a drink, tandoori and nan cheese with the guys at Restoren Mannusalwa, Melawati the other night. Also managed to squeeze half an hour meeting the dudes from the talented Hardcore band, Thy Regiment dekat Wangsa Walk. Forgive me la dudes mungkin lain kali aku interview Thy Regiment. You see, this issue was supposed to feature Thy Regiment but Jenn, the vocalist insisted on a face to face interview which I had no experience in doing. Sold 2 copies of the fanzine to the them Thy Regiment dudes and later on that night sold a couple more copies to my drinking (coke) buddies.

Meet me personally and I will probably sell it to you for a much cheaper price than the stated official price. Kewl.

I am still unsatisfied because banyak sangat isi yang aku tak sempat nak masukkan. Im thinking of doing another fanzine. Starting a new and fresh english written one. Maybe due to the guilt ridden dengan bebudak Thy Regiment. Hahaha. Thinking of asking my photographer friend, Syaiful to tag along. Maybe a photozine would be something new and fresh.

Any ideas?

Lagi:

I have made a few final adjustments. I have redesigned the cover as per the above. Mungkin sebab aku ni memang minimalist so bila tengok cover berserabut sangat, aku tukar la. Putih bersih bak kata Faisal.

Daripada layout lama tu aku terpaksa buang satu artikel sebab terlebih 60 muka surat. Sayang betul. Juga review video video punk hardcore yang aku bersusah payah buat macam Afropunk, Punks Not Dead, American hardore, The Story of the Ramones, N.Y.H.C dan The Decline of Civilizations. My recommendation would be American Hardcore dan Punks Not Dead.

Apa-apa pun, aku happy sebab semua kerja dah selesai. Paling senang lah nak buat isu ni. Mungkin idea terlalu banyak sebab dah 7 tahun tak menulis. banyak terkumpul. Aku yakin Ayeh dan Faisal sendiri pun ada banyak lagi yang nak masukkan content tapi aku terpaksa hadkan sebab tak cukup muka surat. Sorry brothers, mungkin ada rezeki isu 9 kita kasi lagi gempak. Itupun kalau aku decide nak sambung. hahaha. Co editors diam diam aje. hahaha.

Official lah harga dia RM5 (by hand) sebab kedai fotostat dekat ofis aku tu mahal. tapi kualiti kertas AA la, licin dan cantik dan cover aku guna kertas tebal. Insya Allah juga, by this week aku nak gi ambik baju yang dah siap di print tu. Alhamdulillah.

Chalo.
